Baseball Program
The Baseball Division of the CBSL consists of mostly boys and some girls from age 7 to 15. The Division consists of five leagues:
T-Ball (Age 7)
The regular season begins in early April and ends by mid-June. Games are played under standard Babe Ruth little-league baseball rules, with some special rules in place for some of the younger age groups. Each individual league that comprises the Baseball Division of the CBSL is briefly described in the following paragraphs. In addition to the recreational leagues described, there is also summer baseball, fall baseball, and tournament / traveling baseball for those players that excel within their age group.
TEE-BALL - The Tee-ball league is for children age 7, with birth dates between 8/1/2001 and 10/1/2002 for the 2009 season. Games will be played at the Memorial Field Complex, on the small new field closest to the parking lot. The intent of the league is to instruct youngsters in the fundamentals and basic skills required to play the game of baseball, and to introduce them to the basic rules of the game. Not keeping score, and not having team standings or playoffs reinforce the instructional nature of this league. In general, the league starts with children hitting off of a tee, and progresses at the end to where the players are hitting coach's pitches if they can. There are no strikeouts, and if a player cannot hit a coach's pitch he/she can use the tee. The league Vice President for 2009 is TBA.
ROOKIE - The Rookie league is for children age 8, with birth dates between 8/1/00 and 7/31/2001 for the 2009 season. Rookie-league games are played on Coffee field at the Memorial Complex. For 2009, the league will consist of eight teams, named after expansion Major League baseball teams. This league was created only a few years ago, to help ease in the transition from tee-ball to the minor leagues, where the children are bigger and stronger. The league begins with coaches pitching, no called balls and strikes, and players who strike out swinging then getting to hit from a tee. The league then transitions to coaches pitching with swinging strikeouts counting as outs. Finally, for the last few weeks of the season, the youngsters pitch with coaches calling balls and strikes. Coaches take over to pitch to batters after four balls, with no walks being allowed in this league. There are other special rules in place to deal with overthrows, and there is no stealing of bases allowed. Again, the purpose of this league is to continue the instruction begun in tee-ball, and to prepare players for the transition to the boys Minor League. No standings are kept and there is no playoff at the end. The league Vice President for 2009 is TBA.
MINOR LEAGUE - The Boys Minor League is for children age 9 -10, with birth dates between 8/1/98 and 7/31/00 for the 2009 season. Minor-league games are played on Grall and Coffey fields at the Complex. For 2009, the league will consist of 15 teams, named after Native-American tribes. This league becomes slightly more competitive, with standings and playoffs at the end; however, the emphasis is still on instruction in the fundamentals of the game. This league presents the first real opportunity for coaches to work strongly with pitchers. The league approaches more closely regular baseball, with the youngsters pitching from the start of the season, and home-plate umpires selected from a talented pool of 11 and 12-year old youths calling balls and strikes. The only special rules involve overthrows and runners scoring from third base. There is still no stealing of bases, and when the bases are loaded 8 balls constitute a walk. The league Vice President for 2009 is TBA.
MAJOR LEAGUE - The Boys Major League is for children age 11-12, with birth dates between 8/1/96 and 7/31/98 for the 2009 season. Major-league games will be played at the Memorial Complex, on the new field adjacent to the 'Varsity' field. For 2009, the league will consist of 14 teams, named after Major League baseball teams. The league truly mirrors baseball as we normally think of it, with base stealing allowed for the first time. The league Vice President for 2009 is TBA.
SINGLE A - AA Combined League - The combined league is for children age 13 - 15, with birth dates between 8/1/93 and 7/31/96 for the 2009 season. Games are played at the Hillside School fields and the 'Varsity' field at Memorial Complex on Saturdays and Sundays. For 2009, the league will consist of 6 teams. The league Vice President for 2009 is TBA.
